Kimmerich Galllery is pleased to present “Woman on Yellow Motorcycle in Crystal Lake” by american artist Alice Tippit - this will be her first solo exhibition in Germany.
In “Woman on Yellow Motorcycle in Crystal Lake”, Alice Tippit continues her exploration of language and the construction of meaning.
The exhibition’s title simultaneously presents a woman as dynamic yet ineffective. She possesses a powerful motor vehicle but, as the title implies, she is also underwater, seemingly incapable of movement. This dilemma - presented in words - readily forms an image in the mind of a woman on a motorcycle at the bottom of a lake, an illogical state of being.
Works in the exhibition reflect the perplexity at the heart of its title. The familiar symbols, shapes and forms that make up Tippit’s vocabulary often reference genres such as still life and portraiture. Reduced to their essential elements, her compositions shift between positive and negative space, figure and ground, and surface and depth, avoiding immediate legibility. Sphinx-like, Tippit’s works confront the viewer as riddles with no clear answer. Alice Tippit (b. 1975) lives and works in Chicago, Illinois. Solo and group exhibitions include: Nicelle Beauchene, New York, NY; 47 Canal, New York, NY; Night Club, Chicago, IL; Carrie Secrist, Chicago, IL; Paris London Hong Kong, Chicago, IL; Greene Exhibitions, Los Angeles, CA; Roots & Culture, Chicago, IL; Devening Projects, Chicago, IL; Jancar Jones, Los Angeles, CA; and Important Projects, San Francisco, CA.
